Putin publicly acknowledged the crisis in the war against Ukraine for the first time

Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the difficulties facing the Russian army at the front. This was one of the first times when he spoke publicly about the problems in the war against Ukraine.

Such a confession was made during the Russian-Azerbaijani negotiations, which Putin personally held with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

“Russia is facing crises”

During his speech, Putin mentioned the war in Ukraine.

“Everyone is well aware that Russia is also facing crises, in particular, in the Ukrainian direction”, – he noted.

Immediately after mentioning the war in Ukraine, Putin moved on to another armed conflict involving Russia – the situation in the South Caucasus.

“Russia’s historical involvement in the situation in the South Caucasus, including during the last few years, dictates the need for us to participate in these events. Of course, in the part in which the parties demand it.”, he added.

Why is Putin visiting Azerbaijan right now?

This is Vladimir Putin’s first visit to Azerbaijan since the start of a full-scale war against Ukraine two years ago. It takes place against the background of the Ukrainian offensive on Russian territory, where fighting continues, writes Air Force.

After being isolated by the West due to the annexation of Ukrainian lands, Putin is eager to strengthen his ties with allies and find new partners. He signed an alliance agreement with Azerbaijan in the days when his army invaded Ukrainian territory. Although the Azerbaijani government maintains good relations with Ukraine and the West, it has not turned its back on Putin. The current visit is also an attempt by Putin to demonstrate his international support.
