Romanian President Signs Law That Allows Shooting Down Russian Drones Over Country

On May 19, the interim President of Romania, Ilie Bolozhan, signed a law allowing the military to shoot down Russian drones that are illegally in the country’s airspace. About this informs Digi24.

Together with this document, a law was also adopted regarding the implementation of military missions and operations on the territory of Romania in peacetime. Drones, which Russia uses to attack Ukraine, have repeatedly crossed Romania’s airspace. The last such case was recorded on April 29.

In March, Valery Zaluzhnyi, the former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and now Ukraine’s ambassador to Great Britain, stated that the Romanian side asked him not to disclose information about the downing of Russian drones on its territory.

We will remind that on September 18, 2024, the defense ministers of Romania, Poland and Latvia signed a joint letter in which they expressed the need for the introduction of the rotational model of NATO air defense, and also called for the strengthening of deterrence, surveillance, reconnaissance and airspace patrolling measures on the eastern flank of the Alliance.

On February 27, 2025, the Romanian Senate supported a draft law giving the right to shoot down drones entering the country’s airspace without permission.
