Russia has withdrawn hundreds of its troops from Damascus: FT

After negotiations with the new leadership of Syria, Russia withdrew at least 400 troops from the outskirts of Damascus. About this informs Financial Times.

“Russia has evacuated at least 400 soldiers from the Damascus region in recent days in coordination with the main rebel group that toppled Bashar al-Assad’s regime,” – says the message.

According to Kamal Lababidi, a member of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham politburo, Russian troops left the headquarters of the Fourth Division of the Syrian Army, located in Qudsayya, a suburb of Damascus. In addition, Russian military personnel stationed at the embassy in the Syrian capital also left the country last week.

Kamal Lababidi confirmed that discussions on the further withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria are ongoing.

Currently, the future of the Russian presence in Syria remains uncertain. Moscow has long supported the regime of Bashar al-Assad with its troops, but the latest withdrawal from Damascus may indicate a gradual reduction of its involvement in the region.
