Scandal in France: Paris mayor’s office wants to leave Olympic symbols on the Eiffel Tower

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, expressed her desire to leave the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower after the Games. About this informs edition of BILD.

“As mayor of Paris, I make the decision. And I have the approval of the International Olympic Committee. So yes, they will stay at the Eiffel Tower.”, – said Hidalgo.

However, the current rings will have to be replaced with a lighter design to avoid damage due to storm conditions.

However, this plan has attracted considerable criticism. Descendants of the engineer Gustave Eiffel expressed their displeasure, saying that the main symbol of Paris should not be used as an advertising platform. Also, more than 40,000 people signed a petition against this decision.

French Minister of Culture Rashida Dati joined the discussion, who noted that any changes to the monument must be approved by special permits. She reminded that the installation of the Olympic rings was allowed only temporarily on the basis of a special Olympic law.

Despite this, French President Emmanuel Macron supported the idea of keeping the Olympic symbols on the tower.
