Scientists support the NBU’s proposal to rename the name ‘kopiika’ to ‘shag’

From September 16 to 18, 2024, the First Numismatic Conference “Money & Banking: Money and Banks in the History of Europe” was held at the National Bank of Ukraine. During the event, the scientific community expressed support for the NBU’s proposal to rename the coin “kopeck” to “step”. About this reported National Bank press office.

Conference participants positively received the initiative, emphasizing the importance of restoring historical justice and completing the monetary reform. After discussions, it was decided to sign an open letter in support of this proposal, which was signed by 50 conference participants.

Director of the Department of Monetary Circulation of the National Bank of Ukraine Oleg Prohoda emphasized that banknotes and coins are not only a means of payment, but also a unique visiting card of the country, reflecting its history, culture and national spirit. According to him, for many foreigners, banknotes become the first visual acquaintance with the state.

In this regard, the National Bank of Ukraine decided to update the design of banknotes that were issued for the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. The new banknotes are distinguished by the patriotic slogan “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!”, which emphasizes the national identity and spirit of the state.

Prohoda also emphasized the importance of combining the aesthetic appeal and functionality of banknotes. He noted that the NBU is constantly improving the design and protection system of hryvnia banknotes, based on international experience. According to him, the production of banknotes and coins must be reliable and efficient in order to meet the requirements of modern money circulation.
