Fines for scooter drivers can range from UAH 340 to UAH 17,000.

Over the past five years, at least 130 cases related to road accidents involving electric scooters have been heard in courts, of which 34% will be in 2023. Fines for scooter drivers can range from UAH 340 to UAH 17,000, and in some cases, the driver’s license will be revoked for a year. Such data was made public by the “Opendatabot” platform.

Criminal and administrative cases due to road accidents with electric scooters

As of August 2024, the court register revealed 111 administrative and 22 criminal cases related to road accidents involving electric scooters. According to analysts, last year was a record for the number of such cases: 36 administrative and 10 criminal proceedings were registered.

“The number of such cases is increasing every year: more criminal cases have already been opened this year than in all of 2021. Since the beginning of 2024, at least 16 administrative and 3 criminal cases involving scooter drivers have been considered in courts,” Opendatabot notes.

The most common cases of road accidents involving scooters are collisions with pedestrians or damage to property. In such cases, drivers usually receive fines ranging from UAH 340 to UAH 850. However, cases of drunk driving of scooters are being recorded more and more often.

“For example, last year, the driver of a rented scooter hit a woman on the sidewalk. During the check, 0.9 ppm of alcohol was found in his blood, which is equivalent to consuming approximately 250 ml of vodka. The driver was fined UAH 17,000 and his driver’s license was revoked for a year,” they said. in “Opendatabot”.

However, violators cannot always be held fully responsible, as many scooter drivers do not have driver’s licenses and do not know the rules of the road.

“For example, a courier on an electric scooter, who was in a hurry with an order and had 0.33 ppm of alcohol, claimed in court that he was sober, and the scooter is not a vehicle. However, this did not help to avoid a fine of UAH 17,000. Take away the driver’s license , as required by law, failed – the violator never had it,” Opendatabot added.
