September was a record month for civilian casualties in Ukraine this year: UN

In September of this year, as a result of Russian attacks, at least 208 civilians were killed and 1,220 were injured, making this the most tragic month for the civilian population of Ukraine in 2024. This is reported in the monthly reports of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission.

According to the organization, 46% of the dead were people over 60 years old. Also, 9 children tragically died, and another 76 were injured as a result of hostilities.

“Rocket attacks across the country, especially against the cities of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, contributed to the increase in the number of victims. Near the front line, a large part of the victims was caused by attacks using UAVs.”, the report informs.

The UN also noted an upward trend in the number of civilian casualties since July, noting that for three consecutive months, the number of dead and wounded was higher than in any previous month since October 2022.

The report emphasizes that “the vast majority of civilian casualties (92%) and damage to infrastructure facilities, including educational and medical facilities (96%), occurred in territories controlled by Ukraine.”

In addition, at least 30 shellings caused damage or destruction of energy infrastructure, of which 25 occurred on Ukrainian territory, and 5 – in temporarily occupied areas, the UN added.

Russian forces constantly use various types of weapons, including attack UAVs, missiles, guided air bombs (UAVs) and multiple rocket launchers (MSRs), for attacks on Ukrainian regions.

The death of civilians at the hands of the Russian army continues. For example, on the evening of October 10, four people, including a teenager, were killed in Odesa region during rocket fire. Oleg Kiper, the head of Odesa OVA, reported that the shelling caused the destruction of a two-story building where civilians lived and worked. As a result of the attack, 10 people were injured, nine of them were hospitalized, four are in serious condition.
