The SBI accused a former official of the Ministry of Defense of billions in losses to the state

Employees of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), in cooperation with the Department of Internal Security of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (MoD), reported about suspicion of negligent attitude towards military service by one of the former heads of the Department of State Procurement and Supply of Material Resources of the Ministry of Defense.

As the investigation established, after the start of full-scale Russian aggression, a former official of the Ministry of Defense conducted the purchase of fuel and lubricants for the needs of the military. However, contrary to the requirements of the law, the amount of value added tax (VAT) was illegally included in the payment, which led to significant losses for the state. The total amount of losses caused by the negligence of a high-ranking official amounted to about 1.2 billion hryvnias.

The former official was charged under Part 4 of Art. 425 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for negligent treatment of military service under martial law. The sanction of this article provides for punishment in the form of deprivation of liberty for a term of up to 8 years.

At this time, a petition has been submitted to the court to choose a preventive measure for the suspect. The pre-trial investigation continues, during which the investigation continues to find out all the details of the agreement and check other possible violations in the procurement process for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Procedural management in this case is carried out by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the field of defense of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
