Shevchenko National University of Kyiv leads among Ukrainian higher education institutions in the Webometrics ranking

Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University topped the list of Ukrainian institutions of higher education according to one of the world’s most influential academic rankings — Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics). As reported in the center of communications of KNU, in the global list, which includes approximately 32 thousand higher education institutions, the university took 1612 place – the highest among all higher education institutions of Ukraine.

According to the updated ranking for July 2025, the top five Ukrainian universities in Webometrics look like this:

  1. Kyiv National University named after Taras Shevchenko — 1612th place
  2. Sumy State University — 1841 place
  3. National Technical University of Ukraine “KPI named after Ihor Sikorskyi” — 2037th place
  4. Lviv Polytechnic National University — 2213rd place
  5. Kharkiv National University named after V. N. Karazina — 2234th place

The highest positions in the world ranking were taken by the universities of the USA.

Top three:

  1. Harvard University
  2. Stanford University
  3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

The fourth place was taken by Oxford University in Great Britain.

Webometrics Ranking of World’s Universities is an international ranking that evaluates universities based on their activity and influence in the digital environment. Since 2004, it has been compiled twice a year (in January and June-July) by the Cybermetrics Lab at the National Research Council of Spain.

The following key criteria are taken into account in the rating:

  • Visibility – the number of external web resources linking to the site is higher, which indicates its online visibility
  • Transparency (openness) — according to Google Scholar, determines the availability of scientific materials and the frequency of their citation
  • Site content — the volume of pages and digital resources published on the university’s official website

The number of publications included in the 10% most cited in their fields is also evaluated — this reflects scientific productivity and research quality. Data for the ranking is collected from sources such as Majestic, Google Scholar and Scimago-Scopus.
