American engineer Patrick Schlott restores old payphones and installs them in public places in Vermont. The devices allow you to make free calls to numbers in the United States and Canada, provided you have an Internet connection. About this informs National Public Radio.
Schlott finds used payphones on eBay and Craigslist, repairs them in his own workshop, and adapts them to work over VoIP. All expenses, including the payment of communication, are currently covered by themselves. According to him, maintaining one device costs no more than a subscription to Netflix.
The first such payphone appeared in March 2024 near a shop in Tunbridge. Since then, two more devices have been installed in other settlements, and in total hundreds of calls have already been made through them. The machine located near the public library in Thetford Center is the most actively used – it is often used to call parents or ask for help in the event of a car breakdown nearby.
In June, the state of Vermont decided to ban cell phones in schools starting in the 2026-2027 school year. This can make Schlott’s project even more relevant — according to him, requests are already coming in to install payphones near educational institutions.
The engineer notes that the initiative has received some financial support from those who care. At the same time, he emphasizes: no matter how large-scale the project becomes, calls for users will always remain free.
