Yesterday evening in Tbilisi, the Georgian police detained 63 participants of the protest actions against the draft law on “foreign agents”, which is being considered in the parliament.
The detainees are accused of petty hooliganism and disobedience to the lawful demands of the police.
The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Oleksandr Darakhvelidze, said that the protest near the parliament “became violent, and its participants confronted the police verbally and physically.”
He claims that six policemen were injured as a result of the clashes. However, Darakhvelidze did not say how many protest participants were injured.
According to the media, during the night, special forces tried several times to disperse the rally, but the protesters returned to Rustaveli Avenue each time. Finally, at 04:30 in the morning, the special forces retreated, leaving Rustaveli Avenue in the hands of the protesters.
Police used water cannons, pepper spray, tear gas and rubber bullets during the dispersal of protest actions.
During the night, the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, called on the Ministry of Internal Affairs several times to stop the crackdown on the peaceful protest.
