Spain is preparing a plan to protect citizens in case of war amid the escalation of hostilities in Ukraine

Against the background of the escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Spanish government is developing a population protection plan aimed at preparing for possible “war risks” within the country. About this reported local publication “20 minutos”.

Although the risk of military conflict is not considered a “state priority” due to Spain’s distance from Ukraine, the authorities for the first time included it in the list of potential threats that could pose a danger to the country.

The plan is part of the National Civil Defense Strategy, a five-year program approved by Spain’s National Security Council on October 15. The document is designed to help the population learn how to act in the event of a military conflict. It is based on similar guidelines for responding to natural disasters such as fires, floods or volcanic eruptions.

The guides will indicate how to stock up on long-term storage products, water, medicine and other essentials for the week. Citizens will also be informed about how to stay calm, discuss the topic of war with children, stop bleeding and care for animals in emergency situations. These instructions will be similar to similar materials already in use in Sweden, Finland, Norway and the Baltic States.

The civil defense plan serves as a guide for the population on actions in the event of a military threat. Its structure is based on the experience of creating previous guides designed to deal with natural disasters.

It will be recalled that in October, Finland also announced its intention to create a handbook for the civilian population, which will contain recommendations for evacuation, stockpiling and other necessary actions in the event of the outbreak of war.
