Steadfastness and effectiveness: results of NABU and SAP work for the first half of 2024 (video)

The heads of anti-corruption institutions agreed to strengthen cooperation for even more effective detection and investigation of corruption crimes.

In the first half of 2024, NABU and SAP continued to actively expose multimillion-dollar corruption schemes and crimes related to high-ranking officials.

One of the high-profile cases was the exposure of the ex-head of the Verkhovna Rada’s agrarian committee and his accomplices in the illegal acquisition of land worth UAH 291 million, as well as in the attempt to seize another land worth UAH 190 million. This is stated in reports Bureau.

Also, a former high-ranking official of the Administration of the President of Ukraine was exposed, who organized a scheme to take possession of seized petroleum products in the amount of UAH 967 million.

Seven people were suspected of embezzling almost UAH 100 million during the purchase of power transformers during the war. Another criminal group was exposed for seizing UAH 160 million of state and international funds allocated for the reconstruction of Kharkiv.

Detectives and prosecutors also exposed the scheme of illegal seizure of electricity from PJSC NEC Ukrenergo in the amount of UAH 716 million, causing losses of UAH 211 million to JSC Ukrgazvydobuvannya, as well as a criminal organization at the Chernivtsi customs office, due to which the state lost UAH 290 million.

The People’s Deputy and the former Deputy Head of the President’s Office were brought to criminal liability for illegal enrichment of UAH 11 million and UAH 15.7 million, respectively.

Results of the first half of 2024:

  • 323 new investigations were launched;
  • Suspicions were raised against 166 persons;
  • 131 accused;
  • 36 corrupt officials were punished.

The economic effect of NABU and SAP activities in the first half of 2024 reached over UAH 3.7 billion, in particular:

  • More than UAH 3.3 billion was saved during the purchase of UAVs for the Armed Forces;
  • UAH 83.1 million was directed to help the army;
  • UAH 209.3 million was reimbursed to the state;
  • 102.3 million hryvnias were confiscated as state income.

During the final briefing, NABU Director Semyon Krivonos thanked the Bureau’s team for their contribution to joint achievements and emphasized the importance of further strengthening the organization.

“During the 9 years of the Bureau’s existence, we have turned into a stable and powerful law enforcement agency with clear principles and practices that have already formed our DNA,” Kryvonos said.

He also emphasized the need to conduct an independent audit of NABU’s activities as soon as possible in compliance with the principles of transparency and openness.

The head of the SAP Oleksandr Klymenko noted that since March 2024, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office will function as a separate legal entity, independent of the Prosecutor General’s Office. He added that administrative changes have already been implemented, the staff has been updated, and competitive selection for the positions of prosecutors has begun.

Klymenko emphasized that the SAP team is aware of the importance of its tasks in the fight against top corruption against the background of a full-scale war and Ukraine’s course to join the EU and NATO, and is ready for any challenges.

The heads of NABU and SAP agreed to strengthen cooperation for even more effective detection and investigation of corruption crimes, in particular those currently taking place.
