Syrian authorities terminate agreement with Russian company to manage the port of Tartus

The new government of Syria terminated the 49-year contract with the Russian company “Stroytransgaz” for the management of the Tartus seaport. For this informs Al-Watan.

“The agreement signed with the Russian company regarding the investment of the port of Tartus has been canceled, and all revenues from it have gone to the interests of the Syrian state, and the port workers will be reinstated”, says the message.

Director of Customs Riad Judi noted that the port of Tartus was almost non-functional due to strict regulations and excessively high tariffs for port services. In this regard, the transitional government began work on the restructuring and streamlining of the port’s operations. Customs duties have been reduced by 60% compared to previous tariffs, leaving high rates only on selected goods to protect local production.

The new government allowed the import of materials and goods that were previously prohibited. Currently, the port of Tartus is active, receiving ships of Syrian, Arab, international and transit companies transporting various goods, including iron, carbonate, sugar and other cargoes.
