The Accounting Chamber determined how much Ukraine spent on the maintenance of prisoners

The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine created four camps for the detention of Russian prisoners of war, and also organized their accommodation, security and medical care in more than 50 precincts located in penal institutions. About this it is said in the report of the Accounting Chamber, compiled based on the results of the audit.

According to the document, 294.2 million hryvnias were allocated to these needs. At the same time, charitable organizations and international partners, in particular the International Committee of the Red Cross, made a significant contribution to ensuring the proper conditions of detention of prisoners.

The report highlights that after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Ukraine faced the challenge of holding a growing number of Russian prisoners of war. Due to the lack of special infrastructure, the government quickly organized a system of detention of prisoners under the control of the Ministry of Justice.

“Ukraine provides Russian prisoners of war with security, proper housing conditions, medical care, the right to work and other humanitarian rights guaranteed by the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War”, – the Accounting Chamber emphasizes.

At the same time, the audit recommends that the Ministry of Justice take a more strategic approach to the repurposing of institutions, particularly taking into account their use in the post-war period.
