The Ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary was Fedir Sándor, known as the “professor from the trenches”

Ukraine has appointed a new ambassador to Hungary — this important diplomatic position was taken by Fedir Sandor, known as the “professor from the trenches.” His candidacy was officially approved by the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 876/2024, published on December 21.
Fedir Sandor was born in 1975 in Zakarpattia, he combined an academic and military career. Before the war, he worked as a professor at the Uzhhorod National University, doctor of philosophy, head of the department of sociology and social work, and also taught history at the Uzhhorod school. With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, he joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as part of the 101st Territorial Defense Brigade. Despite the hostilities, Sandor conducted lectures for students directly from the front line, which brought him all-Ukrainian recognition.
In August 2023, Hungary approved his candidacy, but the appointment took place only now. This decision is significant, because since 2022 the embassy of Ukraine in Hungary has remained without a head, and relations between the two countries remain difficult.
Fedir Sandor was also actively involved in political activities. In 2020, he was elected a deputy of the Transcarpathian Regional Council from the Servant of the People party, where he headed the commission on cross-border cooperation, tourism and recreation. In 2023, a mini-sculpture “Professor from the Trenches” was even installed in Uzhhorod, dedicated to his contribution to community life and scientific activity.
