The American Film Academy has authorized the use of AI in films

The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated the rules for selecting films for the Oscars, officially allowing the use of artificial intelligence. About this informs New York Times.

According to the new rules, the use of AI alone does not deprive a film of a chance to be nominated. At the same time, the Academy will separately assess how important a person’s participation was in the creative process of creating a tape.

This is the first time artificial intelligence has been mentioned in the rules of the Oscars. The decision comes amid massive strikes by actors and screenwriters that have been ongoing in Hollywood since 2023 due to the impact of technology on the film industry. One recent example of a film that has been officially recognized as using artificial intelligence is Brady Corbett’s The Brutalist.

In his interview, the editor of the film, David Janczo, said that during the two-minute scene, where the letter of the hero Adrien Brody to his wife is read entirely in Hungarian, AI was used. In particular, with the help of the technology of the Ukrainian startup Respeecher, the speech of Brody and Felicity Jones was made to sound much more natural and authentic.

The Academy previously considered requiring filmmakers to disclose information about the use of AI in the production process, but ultimately abandoned such a requirement.

Among other changes is a new rule, according to which the members of the jury can vote in the final stage only after watching all the nominated films in the respective category. However, compliance with this condition remains on the conscience of the participants themselves, because it is based on a system of self-affirmation. The Academy will continue to adapt to transformations in the field of cinema, while emphasizing the priority of human creativity.
