Scottish woman receives reply to letter she threw into sea as a child

42-year-old Scot Alaina Beresford unexpectedly received an answer to a letter in a bottle, which she sent to the sea at the age of 12 as part of a school project. The message reached the shores of Norway, where it was discovered by a volunteer. About this informs BBC.

In 1994, while working on a water project, Alaina decided to throw a letter in a soda bottle into the North Sea.

In the message, she briefly told about herself, left her name, place of residence and addressed the person who finds the letter:

“Dear whoever found this. My name is Alaina Stephen, I’m 12 years old. I’m from Portnocky and I’m working on a project about water, so I decided to send a message in a bottle. My teacher’s husband took it and threw it in the middle of the ocean.

When you find this message, please reply with your name, your hobby, where you found the message, and when. If you can, some information about your region. Sincerely, Alaina Steven. P.S. I’m from Scotland.”

31 years later, Alaina received a postcard from Pia Brodtmann, who came across the message during her volunteer work in Norway. Pia added her own photo to the postcard and described the circumstances of the find:

“My name is Pia, I’m from Germany. Today I found your message in a bottle on Lisselløya, a tiny island near Vega in Norway. I’ve been cleaning the beach here as a volunteer for four months.

On the front side of the postcard you can see our work boat “Nemo” and the sailboat “Fonn” on which we live. The outskirts of Vega are also visible. I wonder when and where your teacher’s husband threw the bottle into the ocean? P.S. I am 27 years old and I really like mountaineering and sailing.”

Alaina admitted that she never expected an answer after three decades:

“I couldn’t believe it because I sent the letter when I was 12 years old, which is 31 years ago. I was shocked when Pia did it. I couldn’t believe it, the letter was so legible. I don’t remember writing the message, but I remember it was a bottle of Morey Cup (Scottish fizzy drink) and that a fisherman man my teacher threw him into the sea.”

Now the women keep in touch on social networks and hope that their acquaintance will develop into a long-term friendship.
