The Business Ombudsman proposes to fight corruption at customs by increasing the salaries of its employees

Overcoming corruption in Ukrainian customs is possible, in particular, by increasing the salaries of its employees. About this stated business ombudsman of Ukraine Roman Vashchuk.
“First, permanent leadership is needed. Second, an increase in the salaries of customs officers, no matter how sad it is for citizens to hear it. A person who lives on $500 a month cannot work with a flow of tens of millions of dollars. A person should be afraid for his workplace. Not only for reasons of possible persecution by law enforcement officers, but also for personal reasons: loss of wages, welfare, pensions. There are many temptations, but a balance must be found.” – believes the business ombudsman.
Vashchuk emphasized that the level of corruption at customs has remained high for a long time. This is evidenced by the data of the report of the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP).
“We have to look at the results of the NAKC study on this matter. We do not look at it from that angle. However, of course, the situation of the gap between the official welfare of customs workers and temptations has been a problem for a long time.” Vashchuk emphasized.
