The Central Election Commission of Romania refused the scandalous Georgescu to participate in the presidential elections

In Romania, the scandalous and far-right leader of the party, Kelin Georgescu, was denied registration to participate in the presidential elections, which will be held in May. This may aggravate the political situation in the country, informs Bloomberg.
A representative of the CEC of Romania announced that Georgescu’s candidacy was declared invalid. The reason was more than 1,000 complaints, mostly because of his anti-democratic and extremist views. At the same time, this decision can still be challenged in the Constitutional Court.
Georgescu’s exclusion from the presidential race on May 4 is likely to increase anti-establishment sentiment in the country and could play into the hands of far-right forces. Polls indicated that if he had participated in the elections, he could have received 40-45% of the vote in the first round, which would have given him a real chance of victory.
His removal could increase the chances of the main pro-European candidate winning, but at the same time could complicate Romania’s relations with the United States. Earlier, US officials called on Bucharest to allow Georgescu to run in the elections.
We remind you that after Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round of the presidential elections last year, the court annulled the voting results, citing suspicions of Russian interference in his campaign. This, in turn, caused a political crisis in the country.
