The Embassy of Ukraine demands to investigate the attack on the Holodomor victims’ memorial rally in Greece

The Embassy of Ukraine in Greece requested an investigation into the attack on the commemoration of the Holodomor victims, which took place in the city of Mandra. The event was organized by the Ukrainian community in honor of the Day of Remembrance of the victims of this tragedy. As a result of the incident, a Ukrainian diplomat was physically injured. About this reported on the official website of the embassy.
The Embassy of Ukraine strongly condemned the aggressive actions committed by the attackers, including members of the Communist Party of Greece (CPG). The statement states that the disruption of the commemorative event is an unacceptable violation of international norms that protect diplomatic representatives.
“The embassy strongly condemns the shameful disruption of a commemorative event that has deep historical and emotional significance for the Ukrainian people. This provocation, which culminated in physical attacks – including an attack on a Ukrainian diplomat who was injured – is completely unacceptable and constitutes a flagrant violation international norms protecting diplomatic personnel”. – said in the statement.
Diplomats called on the Greek authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the right of citizens and communities to commemorate historical tragedies without fear of violence or intimidation.
We will remind you that the commemorative action took place on November 23 near the monument to Taras Shevchenko, where the Ukrainian community honors the victims of the Holodomor every year. Meanwhile, in a nearby square, members of the Communist Party of Ukraine held a counter-meeting, shouting anti-Ukrainian slogans and accusing Ukrainians of “fascism.”
In its statement, the KPG called the commemoration of Holodomor victims “anti-communist propaganda” and opposed Greece’s participation in the “imperialist war”, referring to Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The conflict reached a climax when the parties clashed. The police had to use tear gas.
Ukrainian priest Ihor Posolenyk reported that the communists blocked access to the monument and resorted to aggressive actions. As a result of the attack, a Ukrainian diplomat was injured.
“This event came as a shock to our community, especially considering that the action was dedicated to commemorating a tragic page in our history,” – said the priest.
The Embassy of Ukraine expressed hope that the Greek authorities will not only ensure a proper investigation of this incident, but also prevent similar provocations in the future.
Ukrainian diplomats also emphasized the importance of maintaining friendly relations between Ukraine and Greece, which suffered due to this unfortunate incident.
