The German government approved the 2026 budget, which includes support for Ukraine

The German government at a meeting approved the draft federal budget for 2026, as well as the medium-term financial plan until 2029, which provides for support of Ukraine in the amount of 8.5 billion euros. This is reported by DW.
The budget for 2026 foresees expenditures in the amount of approximately 520.5 billion euros, which is 3.5% more compared to the current year. Planned government borrowing will amount to almost 174.3 billion euros — 31 billion more than this year.
The amount of government investment in 2026 will amount to about 126.7 billion euros, which is 11 billion more than in 2025, and is a record amount for Germany. This growth was made possible by the easing of budget constraints on debt.
A significant increase is also planned in the field of defense: spending will increase from 62.4 to 82.7 billion euros — mainly due to financing the purchase of weapons and ammunition. The medium-term plan also envisages further growth of the defense budget until 2029, reaching the level of 3.5% of GDP, in line with NATO commitments.
The draft budget for 2026 also includes approximately 8.5 billion euros for military aid to Ukraine — this figure was previously confirmed by official sources. Discussion of the draft budget in the Bundestag will start at the end of September, and final approval in both chambers of the German parliament is expected by the end of the year.
