In Russia, they are discussing withdrawal from the IAEA: what is the organization accused of

Moscow believes that the IAEA allegedly does not fulfill its functions, and therefore there is no point in spending money on it.

Russia has already begun to discuss the possibility of leaving the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after the so-called attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZAEP). In particular, such a proposal was expressed by Volodymyr Kuznetsov, the former head of the nuclear and radiation safety inspection of the State Atomic Energy Commission of the USSR. He noted that although this strike had no consequences, they could allegedly become a reality in the future.

Kuznetsov said that the IAEA, he said, had repeatedly ignored Russia’s warnings about shelling of the nuclear power plant and had not expressed any concerns over the past 2.5 years. In his opinion, this is a reason for Russia’s withdrawal from the organization, since, in his opinion, it makes no sense to spend money on participation in the IAEA.

“No one listens to Russian statements, so I continue to insist on the need to leave the IAEA”Kuznetsov noted.

He also expressed concern that “another attack by the Armed Forces” could lead to disruption of the power supply system at the station, which is necessary to support the operation of the equipment. This, he said, could have serious consequences.

On the other hand, Ukraine expects a reaction from the world community and the IAEA on the situation with the ZNPP. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that radiation indicators are currently normal, but the situation at the plant remains dangerous as long as it is controlled by the Russian occupiers, who use the NPP to blackmail Ukraine, Europe and the whole world.

Against the background of this situation, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his intention to build a “safe world”, but experts believe that the provocations at the ZNPP were organized by Russia in order to intimidate the West. The main goal of the Kremlin is to force the West to pressure Ukraine to stop its military operation in the Kursk region, which has become a serious blow to Russia’s image.
