The international community of journalists called on Zelenskyy to stop intimidating the media

Committee for the Protection of Journalists turned to to the President of Ukraine with a call to stop intimidation of media representatives. The corresponding letter was sent to Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

In the appeal, the Committee asks to guarantee the conditions under which journalists and the media could freely carry out their work in Ukraine, as well as to ensure that all those involved in the intimidation of media representatives are brought to justice.

This call was a reaction to a series of incidents that occurred in 2024, including cases of pressure, intimidation, surveillance of journalists, and the lack of punishment for such actions.

“Dear President Zelenskyi, I am writing to you on behalf of the Committee for the Protection of Journalists – an independent public organization that defends press freedom around the world – with a request to help ensure that journalists and mass media in Ukraine can work freely, without fear of reprisals, and that no person responsible for intimidation of journalists should go unpunished.” Jodi Ginsberg, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, said.

She emphasized that the Committee is increasingly concerned by reports of the Ukrainian government’s attempts to unreasonably interfere with the work of the mass media and obstruct journalistic investigations.

Investigations by the Committee to Protect Journalists, as well as conversations with local journalists over the past year, have revealed cases of unreasonable restrictions and interventions that limit press freedom and undermine the democratic principles that the state intends to protect.
