The Ministry of Defense explained how the legal support of servicemen released from captivity is carried out

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine provides servicemen who have returned from captivity with the necessary legal support to clarify the mechanisms for restoring their violated rights. The state guarantees these persons access to justice without any financial costs, informs press service of the Ministry of Defense.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine provides free primary legal assistance, which includes:
- informing about rights, freedoms and obligations;
- clarification of the procedures for the implementation and protection of rights;
- preparation of applications, complaints and other legal documents (except procedural ones);
- access to secondary legal aid and mediation.
Appeals for the provision of such assistance are accepted in accordance with the procedure established by the legislation on citizens’ appeals and are considered in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Free Legal Aid”. If the appeal concerns only the provision of legal information, it is considered within 15 days. Up to 30 calendar days are given for consideration of other requests for free legal aid.
Secondary free assistance is provided by specialized centers and lawyers who are included in the official Register of specialists of the system of free legal assistance.
Such assistance covers:
- defense in criminal proceedings;
- representation in courts, state authorities, local self-government and other structures;
- preparation of procedural documents.
Servicemen can receive this assistance both during their stay in captivity and after their release. In addition, the legislation provides for reimbursement of the costs of professional legal assistance for those who have chosen paid legal services. The amount of compensation is determined by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
