The NBU initiated a public discussion on the future appearance of the hryvnia

National Bank of Ukraine initiated a public discussion about the future form of the hryvnia, inviting historians, artists, numismatists and the general public to participate.

“We definitely do not plan to change the design of banknotes tomorrow, but we want this discussion, we want to hear the opinions of Ukrainians – as historians, artists, experts and just citizens.” – noted NBU Chairman Andriy Pishnyi.

He reminded that the current design of the hryvnia was approved back in 1992, and although over time it underwent changes in protective elements and technical performance, the general concept remained unchanged: on the front side – portraits of prominent Ukrainians, on the reverse side – architectural objects related to them. Pishnyi drew attention to the fact that over the past 30 years, the country and its people have changed significantly, and now it is time to rethink the symbols.

“Does the current generation of Ukraine, which is going through these tragic events, have the right to say what symbols they want to see on the next banknote? For me, this is not even a question.” – emphasized the chairman of the NBU.

In his opinion, it would be fair to start the search for new images for currency signs that would correspond to the modern image of the country.

We will remind that in September 2024, the National Bank of Ukraine also proposed to change the name of the exchange coin from “kopeys” to “steps”, but this initiative has not yet been put into practice.
