The path in the new world: the story of a woman from Kharkiv in Germany

Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine is still ongoing, and the number of people forced to leave their homes due to this conflict remains significant, and is even increasing in some cases. For refugees, especially from the eastern regions, there is no other way out, as their hometowns are partially destroyed, educational institutions and kindergartens are closed, and the constant threat of shelling deepens fear and uncertainty.

Refugees from Ukraine who came to Germany because of this conflict faced new challenges and opportunities in the country that became their temporary refuge. Their adaptation and new life in German society is associated with a difficult process of integration, finding housing, work, education, and most importantly, preserving their cultural identity. People faced different aspects of German life, but found important social support that played an important role in such a difficult time.

IA “FAKT” conducted an interview with Olena from Kharkiv, who was forced to seek protection in Germany in the most difficult and unpredictable circumstances. She was able to honestly answer topical questions with humor and positivity and share her personal experience, which can be useful to both Ukrainians in Germany and those who remain in place.

Olena said that Germans accept Ukrainian refugees openly and wholeheartedly, and most of the positive aspects of this situation depend on our compatriots, their position, behavior and efforts to adapt, and not only on the country where they are. Unfortunately, sometimes our compatriots do not behave decently.

Our interlocutor also noted that Germans actively express support for Ukraine and people affected by the war: “they are against war and violence, these people seek to help all those who have suffered”.

Olena emphasized that the help and understanding provided by the Germans become a reliable and important factor in her family’s life in a new country. The Germans show their openness and hospitality, striving to facilitate the adaptation and integration of Ukrainians in the new environment. This experience becomes an important lesson about the power of human kindness and the ability to help each other even in the most difficult circumstances.
