The Russian army captured one of the largest lithium deposits in Eastern Europe in the Donetsk region

Russian troops captured the village of Shevchenko in the Donetsk region, near which one of the largest lithium ore deposits in Eastern Europe is located. About this informsLe Figaro.

“Having captured this, at first glance, unremarkable village, located a little more than 10 km from Velika Novosilka, Russian troops gained access to one of the most promising lithium deposits in Ukraine.” – the message says.

The reserves of this deposit amount to about 1.2 million tons of ore with a lithium content of more than 1.5%, which makes it one of the largest in the region. Lithium is a metal whose value has risen sharply in recent years. The most famous is its use in the production of batteries – it is lithium batteries that power smartphones, laptops, electric cars and even satellites. Their high energy density, lightness and long service life have made lithium indispensable for modern technologies.

However, its role is not limited to energy. Lithium is actively used in medicine (as a medicine for the treatment of bipolar disorder), in glass ceramics (to increase the heat resistance of dishes), in the production of aluminum and aviation alloys.

In 2022, a ton of lithium reached a record value of more than 80 thousand dollars. As of June 27, 2025, the cost of one ton in China is 8.5 thousand dollars.
