The UK will extend visas for Ukrainian refugees in 2025

Great Britain has always shown strong support for Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes because of the war. Since the full-scale war began in February 2022, the country’s government has created several programs to help refugees from Ukraine, including visa initiatives that allow Ukrainians to receive temporary asylum, employment support, education and access to social services. Such initiatives will continue in 2025. This gesture of solidarity has been an important signal of support in difficult times, and the new steps by the British authorities underline the continuation of this assistance.
New conditions for visa extension
Government of Great Britain announced about another extension of visas – Ukrainian refugees who took advantage of temporary shelter programs will be able to extend their visas for another 18 months. However, this process is not automatic: applicants must submit an appropriate application following a set schedule. Applications are scheduled to open on February 4, 2025, and the deadline for submitting documents depends on the expiration date of the current visa, but must be no later than 28 days before its expiration.
Important application details
The application process involves several key aspects:
- The application can be submitted only on the territory of Great Britain. This is an important point that should be taken into account by all Ukrainian citizens staying in the country under asylum programs.
- During the eight weeks of processing the application, the applicant is prohibited from leaving the territory of Great Britain. At the same time, all rights and legal status are preserved, including access to social security and other privileges.
- The government guarantees the preservation of all social services and rights for applicants during the period of consideration of their applications.
Integration of refugees
New visa extension conditions not only allow Ukrainians to stay in the country, but also contribute to their integration. Along with visa extensions, refugees can continue to work, receive education and benefit from a full range of social services. This creates conditions for the stability and development of Ukrainian citizens in Great Britain.
At the same time, it is important to remember that the time spent under temporary sponsorship programs does not count towards the 10-year period required to obtain the right to permanent residence. This aspect should be taken into account when planning your long-term stay in Great Britain.
The announcement of the extension of visas for Ukrainian refugees for 18 months from February 2025 is evidence that the UK remains committed to its obligations to people who find themselves in difficult life situations. This decision takes into account the specific needs of Ukrainians currently in the country and creates new opportunities for their integration into British society. Extension of visas for Ukrainian refugees is not only a manifestation of support, but also part of a systemic approach to solving migration issues.
