The Ukrainian company has received a certificate as a manufacturer of nuclear fuel components.

The Westinghouse Electric company recognized the branch of NAEK “Energoatom” — “VP Atomenergomash” — as a qualified and approved manufacturer of nuclear fuel components for reactors of the VVER type. “Atomenergomash” received an official certificate confirming the compliance of its quality system with the company’s requirements. Certification is valid until April 29, 2028, reported Energoatomu press office.

“Energoatom” not only ensures the stable operation of the energy system of Ukraine, but also develops the domestic nuclear industry according to high standards, which is confirmed by the world’s leading industry companies. There is still a lot of work ahead, but another step has been taken on the way to TVZ production in Ukraine, which is a significant achievement.” – emphasized the head of the company Petro Kotin.

Previously, “Energoatom” received a Westinghouse license for the production of TVZ shanks on the territory of Ukraine. The construction of a plant for the production of fuel assemblies is planned in the Mykolaiv region, near the satellite city of the South Ukrainian NPP. A domestic production line for the production of nuclear fuel is being created on the basis of the company, and the first Ukrainian heat-separating assembly is planned to be loaded into the power unit in 2027.

In the future, Energoatom intends to supply up to 50% of its nuclear fuel needs through its own production, and to purchase the rest from Westinghouse. Ukraine has been using Westinghouse heat-separating assemblies since 2015 on VVER-1000 type reactors. On June 2, 2022, Energoatom and Westinghouse signed an agreement on the supply of nuclear fuel for all nuclear power plants in the country.

We will remind that in March 2024, the first batches of American nuclear fuel were delivered to the Khmelnytskyi NPP, which became the last of the Ukrainian plants to switch to fuel produced by Westinghouse.
