The United States blocked the G7 initiative aimed at combating the Russian “shadow fleet”

The United States of America blocked the G7 initiative aimed at combating the Russian “shadow fleet”. Washington is pushing for tougher rhetoric on China, while offering to soften the wording on Russia. About this reported Bloomberg edition.
Canada, which chairs the G7 this year, has put forward a proposal to create a task force to counter Russia’s “shadow fleet” used to circumvent sanctions. However, the US opposed this initiative, revising its positions in international organizations. A summit of G7 foreign ministers is scheduled to take place next week in Charlevoix, Quebec.
According to Bloomberg sources, the United States is demanding a change in the wording of the joint statement on maritime issues. In particular, they insist that the term “sanctions” in the context of “Russia’s ability to sustain the war” should be replaced by the more neutral wording — “earn revenue.”
In addition, the US insists on intensifying rhetoric against China. The text should outline the threats Washington says China’s actions pose, including its “illegal maritime claims” and dangerous aerial maneuvers that could threaten “lives and livelihoods,” especially in the South China Sea.
In addition to blocking the “shadow fleet” initiative, the US also opposes references to “maritime resilience.” Also, Washington does not support the creation of a maritime observatory that would monitor border changes. This issue is important in many maritime conflicts, particularly in the South China Sea.
Currently, the final text of the joint statement has not yet been agreed, and it may be changed during the negotiations or directly at the summit.
