The United States is preparing new restrictions for China in the field of artificial intelligence for Trump’s inauguration: SCMP

The United States is set to introduce new regulations that will limit China’s access to high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) used to train artificial intelligence (AI) models. These measures are expected to be announced before the end of Joe Biden’s term as president on January 20. About this writes Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post.

The likely restrictions will be aimed at strengthening control over the global supply of graphics processing units (GPUs) by eliminating existing regulatory loopholes. The measures would be a continuation of previous US actions, which included an investigation into the production of “traditional chips” in China and the blacklisting of 140 Chinese companies linked to the semiconductor industry.

It was previously reported that Washington had planned to adopt the new rules by the end of December 2024, but due to delays caused by budgetary difficulties and the need for peer review, their implementation has been postponed.

The Biden administration has already implemented three key export control rules aimed at slowing China’s progress in advanced semiconductor manufacturing and limiting access to modern technologies. The main reason for these actions is the fear that American technology can be used to modernize Chinese military capabilities.

The new rules are also aimed at preventing the circumvention of existing restrictions through third countries. The move is part of a broader U.S. strategy to contain China’s technological advances in critical areas, including artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

The decision by the Biden administration is expected to have lasting effects on China’s technology industry, limiting its access to the advanced chips that underpin today’s technology.
