The Verkhovna Rada failed to vote on the statement on the elections in Ukraine after the ceasefire

The Verkhovna Rada failed to pass the resolution “On supporting democracy in Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression”, which stipulated that presidential elections would be announced after the achievement of “comprehensive, just and stable peace” on the territory of Ukraine. About this reported People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

Only 218 people’s deputies voted for Resolution No. 13039 instead of the required 226. The statement states that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi were elected in free, transparent, democratic elections with the invitation of international observers, which were recognized by the entire international community.

The authors of the document emphasize that in the event of organizing and holding elections during the period of martial law, all national and international principles of electoral law will not be observed, which will turn such elections into a farce.

The statement also emphasizes that the legitimacy of President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s mandate is not questioned by either the Ukrainian people or the Verkhovna Rada:

“The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, must exercise his powers before taking office as the newly elected President of Ukraine in accordance with part one of Article 108 of the Constitution of Ukraine.”
