The White House asks Congress to support the cancellation of Ukraine’s debt in the amount of $4.65 billion

The administration of US President Joe Biden announced its intention to write off Ukraine’s debt of $4.7 billion, provided in the form of loans, and submitted a corresponding initiative to Congress. This was reported by State Department representative Matthew Miller on November 20. transmits Reuters.
This step is aimed at ensuring maximum support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression until the end of the term of office of the current administration.
“We have taken the step required by law to cancel these loans,” Miller said at the briefing.
The financial bill approved by Congress, which entered into force in April, provides for $9.4 billion in loans for economic and budgetary support of Ukraine. Half of this amount — $4.7 billion — can be written off by President Biden after November 15. In total, the bill includes $61 billion to support Ukraine against a full-scale invasion by Russia beginning in February 2022.
However, Miller noted, Congress still has the ability to block the move. However, the majority of senators, regardless of party affiliation, support the continuation of aid to Ukraine.
The publication reports that President Biden instructed to accelerate the transfer of aid to Ukraine before the end of his presidential term on January 20. This is due to fears that the newly elected President Donald Trump may limit further support to Ukraine.
