Texas is preparing to completely ban social media for minors

Texas is preparing to become the first state in the US to completely ban the use of social media by those under the age of 18. About this informs Engadget.

The relevant draft law has already passed the Senate committee and will be put to a vote in the near future. If the document is approved by June 2, it will enter into force after the governor signs it.

According to the draft law, all users must undergo age verification when creating accounts in social networks. Accounts already created by minors will be subject to blocking. In addition, parents will have the right to request the deletion of their children’s accounts, which platforms will have to do within 10 days or face fines.

Texas is not the only state trying to limit youth social media presence. For example, Florida already has a law that prohibits children under 14 from registering and requires parental consent for users aged 14-15. At the same time, the Texas initiative is much tougher.

Despite broad support among legislators, the draft law causes a lot of debate. Supporters believe it will help preserve the mental health of teenagers, but critics call it a threat to free speech and predict lawsuits should it be implemented.
