TikTok Restricts Beauty Filters For Teens, Worried About Their Mental Health

The TikTok platform is introducing new restrictions aimed at protecting teenagers from the harmful effects of beauty filters and increasing user safety. About this informs The Guardian.

In the coming weeks, teens under 18 will lose access to filters that change facial features, such as eye enlargement, skin smoothing or lip augmentation. However, the restrictions will not apply to comedy effects, such as images with rabbit ears or dog noses.

TikTok also announced the launch of automated systems based on machine learning to strengthen age-restriction controls, especially for users under 13. These measures are aimed at combating unrealistic beauty standards, which can lead to lower self-esteem and higher levels of anxiety among young people.

During a security forum in Dublin, TikTok representatives said that the platform already deletes up to 20 million accounts every quarter for violating age guidelines. New technologies are designed to make this process even more efficient.

The developments coincide with preparations for the introduction of the UK’s Safer Online Act, which will introduce stricter rules to protect minors on social media.
