Donald Trump’s administration reported Congress on the intention to allow the export of weapons to Ukraine through direct commercial sales in the amount of 50 million dollars.
The decision was submitted to Congress under the Arms Export Control Act, which gives the US president the authority to control the import and export of defense products and services. The proposed agreement provides for the export of defense goods to Ukraine, including technical documentation, as well as relevant services.
Between 2015 and 2023, the United States privately authorized more than $1.6 billion in ongoing exports of defense goods and services to Ukraine through the DCS program. As part of the latest aid package to Ukraine, Congress approved more than $1 billion worth of weapons under this program. The previous US administration under the leadership of President Joe Biden allowed the use of part of these funds to transfer important weapons to Ukraine, including fully automatic machine guns.
The move coincided with Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s recent statement about Ukraine’s plans to purchase $30 billion to $50 billion worth of air defense systems and other weapons from the United States as part of future security guarantees.
