Trump calls on Iranian leader to negotiate nuclear weapons

US President Donald Trump has sent a letter to Iran’s leader Ali Khamenei urging him to start negotiations on an agreement that could prevent the further development of Iran’s nuclear program. About this informs Bloomberg.

“I wrote them a letter expressing my hope that you (Iran) would negotiate because if we had to intervene militarily, it would be terrible for them.” – said Trump.

He emphasized that, although he does not reject the possibility of military intervention, he prefers a diplomatic solution to the situation.

“I’m not sure everyone agrees with me, but we can make a deal that’s as good as if you won militarily.” – added the US president.

Trump’s use of the diplomatic letter is a continuation of the approach of former US President Barack Obama, whose correspondence with Khamenei helped launch negotiations that eventually led to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a 2015 deal that included sanctions relief in exchange for certain curbs on Iran’s nuclear program.
