Turkey proposes to create two states in Cyprus

Turkey insists that the settlement of the conflict in Cyprus is possible only through the creation of two separate states. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Hakan Fidan, informs AP.

Fidan stressed that Cyprus must continue to move towards a two-state solution and believes that attempts to reach other agreements to end the half-century conflict are futile.

These statements were made on the eve of the UN’s plans to hold a meeting in the spring with the aim of resuming official negotiations on the Cyprus issue. The last large-scale effort to conclude a peace agreement failed in 2017. Since then, Turkey has consistently advocated a two-state approach.

It will be recalled that the division of Cyprus was a consequence of the Turkish invasion of 1974, which took place after a coup organized with the participation of Greece. Since then, the negotiations have remained at an impasse.

Northern Cyprus is controlled by the self-proclaimed Turkish Cypriot state, which is recognized only by Turkey. Ankara says that the resumption of negotiations is possible only on the condition of recognizing the equal sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriot administration and the Greek authorities of the island.
