U.S. postpones tariffs on Canadian goods for a month: Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reported, that the US will delay for a month the introduction of planned tariffs on Canadian imports. This happened after a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump.

“The proposed tariffs will be delayed for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau said.

He also noted that after a constructive conversation with Donald Trump, countries are intensifying efforts to combat the illegal trade in fentanyl.

In addition, according to him, Canada is strengthening border protection:

“Canada is implementing a $1.3 billion border security plan, bolstering it with new helicopters, technology, increased personnel, increased coordination with our American partners and additional resources to combat fentanyl trafficking. Nearly 10,000 personnel will be on the ground to protect our border“.

Trudeau also announced the creation of a new position to oversee efforts to combat drug trafficking:

“We are going to add Mexican cartels to the list of terrorist organizations, provide 24-hour surveillance of the border and, together with the United States, create a joint task force to fight organized crime, illegal trafficking of fentanyl and money laundering.

I also signed a new directive for intelligence agencies focused on organized crime and fentanyl, which will provide $200 million.”
