Ukraine blocks Russian candidates for senior positions in research groups of the International Telecommunication Union

The Ukrainian delegation has successfully blocked the candidacies of Russian representatives for leadership positions in the research groups of the International Telecommunication Union for the period 2025-2028. This was reported by the Ministry of Digital Transformation.
Thanks to the support of 40 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, France, and Poland, Russian candidates are now deprived of the opportunity to actively participate in international telecommunications processes.
‘They will only be able to observe the results of research, without the ability to influence the definition of standards and the development of telecommunications technologies,’ the report says.
This decision is aimed at strengthening international law and order and global security in the field of telecommunications.
The International Telecommunication Union is a specialised UN agency responsible for setting standards in the field of communications, allocating radio frequencies, managing satellite orbits and supporting the development of telecommunications infrastructure in different countries. With 193 countries in the union, the standards set by the ITU are of key importance to the global telecommunications industry.
