Ukraine decided to build new prisons

New ones are planned to be built in Ukraine prison, as repair works in some institutions are not capable of radically changing the situation. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine and Minister of Justice Olga Stefanishyna during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada.
She noted that during the year more than 3,000 prisoners received improved conditions of detention, which was positively reflected in the report of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on the implementation of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights.
“But at the same time, having immersed myself in this topic, I prioritized the construction of new prisons, since the system of execution of punishments was inherited from the Soviet Union, and even with the best repairs, it will not be able to ensure the fulfillment of those standards that provide for the maintenance of order and control in the penal system. That is why we are looking for resources for this.” Stefanishyna stressed.
The official said that the conditions in the existing institutions are currently gradually improving, but in the long term, it is necessary to create new institutions. She added that even in the conditions of occupation, it was possible to successfully carry out the necessary transfers of convicts.
