Ukraine’s energy system is on the brink: the consequences of Russian strikes are becoming critical

Ukraine’s power grid was at significant risk of failure following Russian missile and drone attacks on November 17. This is reported The Guardian.
It is noted that the Russian strikes were aimed at electrical substations, which are of critical importance for the functioning of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Because of this, there is a risk of the reactors losing power, which can create a hazard.
“It is clear that Russia is using the threat of a nuclear disaster as the main military lever to defeat Ukraine. But by carrying out attacks, Russia is creating the risk of a nuclear disaster in Europe comparable to Fukushima in 2011, Chernobyl in 1986 or even worse.”, – nuclear expert Sean Burney shared his opinion.
The publication recalls that during the attacks on November 17, Russia launched more than 210 missiles and drones aimed at electricity production and transmission facilities throughout Ukraine. Although these strikes did not directly target nuclear plants, experts note that attacks on substations may have been a deliberate attempt by Russia to increase the risks to Ukraine’s nuclear power industry.
Greenpeace warns that in the event of a power outage, nuclear reactors can operate thanks to diesel generators and batteries capable of providing emergency power for 7-10 days. However, failure to replenish fuel supplies or restore power in a timely manner could lead to a major nuclear disaster.
