Ukraine’s military losses exceeded a trillion dollars: analytical report

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the indirect financial losses of Ukraine are estimated at 1.164 trillion dollars. This takes into account the income that the country has lost and will lose due to the war. The value added that was not created due to the war is $385 billion, almost twice the GDP of Ukraine in 2021. This is stated in research Kyiv School of Economics (KSE).
Compared to the previous report published a year ago, revenue losses have more than tripled. This happened due to the expansion of the list of affected subjects and the increase of the evaluation period from 34 to 46 months.
The study covers the period from February 2022 to June 2024 (actual losses) and the forecast for the period until the end of 2025. The division into actual and projected losses is conditional, since the most recent data are available only until 2023.
The largest revenue losses by economic sector were experienced by productive industries: trade ($450.5 billion), industry, construction and services ($410 billion), agriculture ($83.1 billion). Significant losses also occurred in the infrastructure sectors: energy ($43.1 billion) and transportation ($38.8 billion).
As for additional costs, the largest sums fall on demining ($42 billion) and the housing sector ($22 billion), in particular, citizens’ spending on housing rent.
In addition, the costs of social benefits increased significantly (10 billion dollars), and the dismantling of destroyed objects and the removal of waste accounted for 13.4 billion dollars.
We will remind, according to the World Bank, by the end of 2023, the total economic, social and other losses of Ukraine from the war amounted to 499 billion dollars.
