Ukraine suspends obligations under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe: Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Ukraine suspends the fulfillment of its obligations under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, which regulates quantitative restrictions on weapons. About this reported Ministry of Foreign Affairs according to the results of the Meeting of Heads of Foreign Diplomatic Institutions.
“Initiated the suspension of obligations under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe”, – the message says.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that this step is “the next step for our strengthening after the suspension of the Ottawa Convention” on the prohibition of anti-personnel mines. The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) was signed on November 19, 1990 in Paris between the member states of NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
The purpose of the document was to limit the number of tanks, armored fighting vehicles, artillery systems, combat aircraft and attack helicopters as a means of reducing military tension and strengthening security in Europe. Russia ceased its participation in the CSCE in 2007, and officially withdrew from it on November 7, 2023. On the same day, NATO member countries also announced the termination of participation in the treaty.
We will remind you that on July 15, the Verkhovna Rada supported the draft law on the suspension for Ukraine of the convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines and on their destruction (Ottawa Convention). Earlier, the corresponding decree was signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
