People’s deputy Fedir Venislavskyi initiates amendments to the law “On the Armed Forces of Ukraine”, which provide for the creation of a new type of Armed Forces – the Space Forces.
“The draft law has only been submitted for registration. The provisions of the draft law are supported by the Minister of Defense, as he stated during the meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence. Public consultations with other interested parties regarding the provisions of the draft law were not held.”, — said Venislavskyi.
The explanatory note states that the adoption of the law should provide organizational, legal, institutional, and military-technical capabilities to counter threats from outer space by the Russian Federation or other potential aggressors. According to the author of the initiative, the creation of Space Forces is technically realistic due to the available scientific, engineering and production potential of Ukraine in the field of space.
“Ukraine has the opportunity to create its own satellites for the needs of the security and defense sector, which, in combination with appropriate carriers for their launch into space, will ensure the formation of its own capabilities for detecting missile launches from enemy territory — Ukraine will receive its own early warning system about enemy missile strikes.”, the document says.
The creation of space forces will allow Ukraine to take preventive actions and provide practical means of countering missile and space threats. The presence of a new type of troops will contribute to the development of a national system of secure satellite communication for defense and security needs, as well as to the strengthening of intelligence capabilities through the development of its own orbital constellation of satellites.
“Ukraine became the first victim in the world of a terrorist attack by an aggressor country – the Russian Federation using a space attack tool in the form of a medium-range exo-atmospheric missile system with an orbital separation stage of separate combat units with high-precision guidance, which was struck on the territory of Ukraine through international space.”, – it is noted in the explanatory note.
