Ukrainian culture under protection: MKIP creates an electronic archive of museum treasures

With the beginning of a full-scale war, the issue of preserving Ukrainian cultural heritage became especially urgent. In order to prevent the theft and destruction of unique artifacts, the creation of the Register of Museum Funds has been started in Ukraine. This is a free state tool designed to facilitate the work of museum workers, employees of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine (MKIP), as well as for everyone who is interested in the cultural heritage of our country.

Anastasia Bondar, Deputy Minister for Digital Development, Digital Transformations and Digitalization of the ICIP told about how the register is filled, how it functions, and how this tool will help preserve cultural heritage for future generations.

“The register has already started working in test mode, and museums are actively studying it and starting to fill it. The system consists of two parts: an internal one, accessible to museums, and a public portal for all citizens. This portal will become an interactive tool for studying, searching and popularizing Ukrainian cultural The register of the museum fund is a kind of digital fortress that will ensure reliable management of museum collections.”, — noted Anastasia Bondar.

Currently, the Register is filled by employees of museums and nature reserves who undergo special training to work in the system. At the first stage of implementation, the project involves institutions specified by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated December 2, 2021.

The development of the Register was carried out by the Strimco company on the order of the International Solidarity Fund with the financing of the Polish government for Ukraine and the ICIP. Currently, the ministry is working on a draft resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “On the implementation of an experimental project on the introduction of the Register of the Museum Fund of Ukraine”. The register is planned to be expanded, integrated with other state and international resources, as well as to simplify document circulation in the field of culture.
