Ukrainian Foreign Ministry criticises UN Secretary-General’s decision to accept Putin’s invitation to BRICS summit

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed concern over the decision of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to accept an invitation to the BRICS summit in Kazan from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasizes that such a step harms the reputation of the UN and contradicts peacekeeping efforts.

“The UN Secretary General rejected Ukraine’s invitation to the first Global Peace Summit in Switzerland. Instead, he accepted an invitation to Kazan from the war criminal Putin. This is a wrong choice that does not contribute to the cause of peace. It only damages the reputation of the UN.”, – it is said in messages, published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on the Kh platform.

The BRICS summit, which will be held in Kazan on October 22-24, will be a meeting place for the leaders of more than two dozen countries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. This was previously reported by the British publication The Telegraph.

As for BRICS, it is a geopolitical association that includes five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The group was established in 2006 and South Africa joined in 2011. In August 2023, six new countries were invited to join BRICS, including Argentina, which later withdrew, and Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia, which began their activities as part of the association on January 1, 2024.

This year, the BRICS presidency passed to Russia, and Vladimir Putin is hoping for the participation of a Chinese delegation led by Xi Jinping at the summit in Kazan.
