Ukrainian men with expired passports can stay in Estonia: details

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Estonia has clarified its position regarding Ukrainian male refugees of conscription age who have expired passports.

The official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Citizenship and Migration Affairs, Anneli Viks, emphasized that Estonia does not plan to forcibly deport these people.

Ukrainian citizens legally residing in Estonia, fleeing war, will not be forcibly repatriated, even if their passports are expired.”, – Vix assured.

At the end of April, about 6,500 Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 were under temporary protection in Estonia.

Weeks noted that the loss of a valid travel document can have negative consequences for those who will not be able to get a new passport at the Ukrainian embassy.

“However, the absence of a valid passport is not an obstacle to applying for obtaining or extending a residence permit (including temporary protection).”, – she explained.

Identification of a person is also possible on the basis of other documents. However, to obtain a visa, a foreigner will still need a valid travel document.”, – added Vix.

In general, there are currently about 31,000 Ukrainians who have received temporary protection in Estonia.
