UN Security Council discusses escalation of war in Ukraine

An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council was held, dedicated to the escalation of the war in Ukraine. Assistant Secretary General of the UN Myroslav Yencha reported, that since the previous meeting, which took place three weeks ago, Russia has significantly increased its attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages.

According to him, the rocket attack on Kyiv on the night of June 16-17 was the most destructive in the last year, as a result of which at least 28 civilians were killed, more than 130 people were injured, and dozens remained under rubble.

On the same day, Russian shelling also hit Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, and Kyiv regions. According to available information, two more people died in these regions, and dozens of people were injured.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 13,438 civilians, including 713 children, have been killed and 33,270 injured in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.

Director of Operations of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Edem Vosornu, emphasized that the war affects the lives of millions of Ukrainians every day. In her address, she called on the UN Security Council to strengthen the protection of civilians, ensure safe access to humanitarian aid and guarantee sustainable financial support.
